About
Inherited Blood Disorders
Inherited blood disorders are rare, chronic diseases that can have many physical complications, as well as significant emotional, social, and financial burdens on patients and their families.
However, if managed correctly, patients can live long, healthier lives, and are able to go to school and work and contribute to their communities.
We address our patients’ needs, while integrating intensive patient and family education. The outcome is fewer bleed-related hospitalizations, fewer days lost from school and work, increased employment, and a decrease in patient care costs.
Why Choose A Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center?
- HTCs are nationally recognized – that provide comprehensive care to patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
- HTC providers are experts in the treatment of hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. The multidisciplinary care team consists of a hematologist, nurse, social worker and physical therapist. Other specialties include orthopedics, genetics, dentistry, infectious disease, and nutrition.
- HTCs provide access to the latest treatment, information, research and clinical trials.
- HTCs care for nearly 28,000 people with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and other bleeding disorders.
- HTC patients have better outcomes; mortality rates are 40% lower in patients treated at an HTC than those who are not, despite the fact that more severe patients are usually seen in HTCs.
- HTC patients are taught skills for self care; nearly 90% of severe hemophilia patients seen at HTCs self-infuse their medicine.
- HTCs provide clotting factor and other medications at reduced cost through a federal discount program.
- The National Hemophilia Foundation recommends that individuals with bleeding disorders receive regular check-ups at a federally funded HTC.
